In 2011, a small team from our Ethiopian partner project, along with members of our Ghanaian project, attended the Pan African Association of Cleft Lip and Palate (PAACLIP) Congress, which was sponsored by Transforming Faces.
Last year, we also awarded funding to Project Harar, a charity that provides medical treatment for children in Harar, to defray the costs of researching past project participants. Project Harar referred children for treatment at our local project and arranged for transportation.
Yeabsra Hailmarim, a patient referred to us by Surgeon Mekonen Eshete in Addis Ababa, required out-of-country treatment for her complex bilateral cleft. With the assistance of the Herbie Fund at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Yeabsra underwent complex reconstructive surgery in April 2011 and will return to Toronto in 2012 to undergo a final nose reconstruction surgery.
