Transforming Faces (TF) is a global proponent of Comprehensive Cleft Care (CCC), a multi-disciplinary and team based approach to cleft rehabilitation where Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) often play a crucial leadership role.
In many parts of the world, speech therapy is not recognized as a health care profession. This, however, is starting to change! We have seen great strides made in recognizing speech therapy in Ghana, Uganda, and in Ethiopia where TF supported the first ever speech therapy undergraduate program.
Still, newly trained SLPs in low-resource underserved contexts often lack access to career development opportunities, including networking and clinical support.
The International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders (IALP) is a global organization with an agenda to improve the quality of life of individuals with disorders of communication, speech, language, voice, hearing and swallowing – many of which can limit children with children with cleft lip and palate.
Joining forces with the IALP as a member and sponsor of the SLP SEED Project, TF has already connected 21 new and emerging SLPs from underserved contexts to a network of IALP support where they receive one on one mentorship with senior members. Additionally, they are given unlimited access to IALP publications, webinars, tutorials, collaborative association activities, and more.
Through their mentorship and professional development, we are contributing to the foundation of local support for children and families with cleft lip and palate – making speech therapy care accessible and sustainable for all.
